In 1869, Ivan Standl took the first photograph of the Baška Tablet, one of the most important monuments of Croatian literacy, without a digital camera or the ease of taking dozens of repeat shots. Mirna Lipovac of the Zagreb-based Society of Friends of the Glagolitic Script explores how this pioneer of Croatian photography captured the image, the obstacles he faced, and why his photograph is still considered one of the finest images of the tablet. His undertaking also offers a way into the early history of documenting heritage through photography.
